Mariners bounce back in important game

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

Last night just about everyone was saying the Mariners needed to win this game or they were out of it, unless they got super Luckey and swept Texas and have Houston get swept by Arizona in the final series. And they won!

In the first top of the first inning with the Astros batting there were the bases loaded with two outs. Everyone thought that it was going to be the same as yesterday when they lost 5-1 but the all-star George Kirby got a ground ball right to J.P. Crawford to get out of the Inning. In the bottom of the inning the Mariners didn’t have the best offense. J.P. struck out, Julio struck out and Cal flied out all in the first inning. Nothing really happened in the second but in the third inning the Mariners scored with Mike Ford on Second and Josh Rojas hitting. Rojas hit a fly ball and Kyle Tucker made an amazing catch. Ford Tagged up (Ford doesn't have the best speed) but Tucker’s throw wasn’t nearly as good as his catch it got by Bregman and out of play to give Ford the extra base which forced him to score. Later in the inning with Ty France at third Julio hit a towering fly ball into left field which resulted in a sac fly to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. In the fifth inning catcher Cal Raleigh threw out Jeremy Peña trying to steal second. In the bottom of the fifth inning with Josh Rojas on second and Julio Rodríguez on first Cal Raleigh hit a little bloop single into right field Rojas easily scored Julio tried to get to third Kyle Tucker threw it out of play Julio scored and the Astros had their third error of the day. Also, in that inning Teoscar Hernández had an RBI single to score Cal Raleigh. In the seventh Jon Singleton of the Astros had a sac fly to score Yainer Díaz from third. In the eighth Ty France hit a homer to make it 6-1 Mariners. In the top of the ninth Andrés Muñoz got Yordan Alvarez to pop out to Julio in center field and the Mariners win.

*X=Clinched Wild Card

With the win the Mariners are now 4.0 games back from the division which means to win the division they would have to sweep Texas and have Houston get swept by Arizona. They are also 1.5 games back from the wild card which means they would have to win 2 of 4 against Texas and Houston lose 2 of 3 in Arizona hopefully the M’s can pull it off!
