The Mariners have acquired infielder Jorge Polanco from the Twins in a five- player trade. In the trade the Mariners received Jorge Polanco and the Twins received RHP Justin Topa, RHP Anthony DeSclafani, and minor leaguers Gabriel Gonzalez and Darren Bowen plus about $3 million of cash.
Jorge Polanco is probably the most reliable infielder the M’s have had since the Robinson Cano era when they had him 2014-2018. Although the Mariners had Kolten Wong and Adam Frazier, they didn’t have the exact results that they thought they would. For example, in 216 plate appearances Kolten Wong only put-up a .165 batting average with a .241 on base percentage and a .468 OPS.
Polanco on the other hand last year had an .255 batting average, 14 home runs, (where in T-Mobile Park he would have hit 18.) and a .789.
Polanco will play second base mostly with a platoon at third between Luis Urias and Josh Rojas. Polanco will help the Mariners with better offense at the number 3 spot. He also brings speed and athleticism both on the bases and in the field.
