Yankees Acquire Soto

On Wednesday the New York Yankees acquired OF Juan Soto in a seven player deal with the Padres. Soto has one year left on his contract with also one year of club control left. Unless the Yankees resign him when he becomes a free agent in 2025.

Juan Soto a 3x all star, has had an amazing career being only the sixth player in MLB history to finish runner up in both rookie of the year and MVP in the same year. He is also a 1x home run derby champion, with 160 home runs in his career through 8 seasons. Although he had a down year in 2023 he is still one of the best current MLB players. He had probably the best year of his career in 2020 when he was with the Nationals. He had a .351 batting average followed by a 1.185 OPS. And in 2022 he ended the season just short of a 1.000 OPS ending with a frustrating .999 OPS. The Yankees also received OF Trent Grisham in the trade, so a pretty good deal for the Yankees.

On the other side the Padres received five players. Including righties Michael King, Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez, starting pitching prospect Drew Thorpe and C Kyle Higashioka. The most notable player on the deal is Kyle Higashioka who is a big league catcher which the Padres need with their current starting catcher Austin Nola starting to get old.

The Yankees struggled in 2023 finishing 4th and finishing 82-80. We'll see if these additions will put the Yankees back at the top of the division where their used to being.
